Two numbers on the same screen

Every earthquake report in Japan gives you two numbers, and they answer different questions. Magnitude is about the earthquake. Shindo is about you.

Shindo is the one to look for. It is measured at your location, it decides whether the trains stop and the lifts halt, and it is the number the rest of this article is about.

Depth matters too, in a way that surprises people: a deep earthquake is felt across a wider area but more weakly.

01震度しんどは「あなたの ところの ゆれ」

震度しんどは、あなたが いる 場所ばしょが どのくらい ゆれたかです。同おなじ 地震じしんでも、場所ばしょに よって 数字すうじが ちがいます。

Shindo is how strongly the ground moved where you are. In the same earthquake, the number differs from place to place.

震度しんどは 機械きかいが 自動じどうで 測はかります。人ひとが 決きめるのでは ありません。気象庁きしょうちょうは「平成へいせい8年ねん4月がついこう、計測震度計けいそくしんどけいに より 自動的じどうてきに 観測かんそくして います」と 書かいて います。

Shindo is measured automatically by instruments, not judged by people. The JMA states it has been observed this way since April 1996.

数字すうじは 10個こ あります。0、1、2、3、4、5弱じゃく、5強きょう、6弱じゃく、6強きょう、7です。

There are ten levels: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5-jaku, 5-kyo, 6-jaku, 6-kyo, 7.

ニュースの 地図ちずには、丸まるい しるしが たくさん 出でます。1つの 丸まるが、1つの 観測点かんそくてんです。丸まるの 中なかの 数字すうじが、その 場所ばしょの 震度しんどです。震しん源げんに 近ちかい ところほど 数字すうじが 大おおきく なる ことが 多おおいですが、地面じめんの かたさでも かわります。

Each circle on a news map is one observation point, and the number inside it is the shindo there. Points nearer the epicentre are usually higher, but ground conditions change this.

02マグニチュードは「地震じしんの 大おおきさ」

マグニチュードは、地震じしんそのものの 大おおきさです。1つの 地震じしんに、マグニチュードは 1つだけです。あなたの 場所ばしょの ことは 教おしえて くれません。

Magnitude is the size of the earthquake itself. One earthquake has one magnitude, and it tells you nothing about your location.

気象庁きしょうちょうに よると、日本にほんと その まわりでは、マグニチュード7の 地震じしんが 1年いちねんに 平均へいきんで 1回かい、マグニチュード6台だいが 17回かい、マグニチュード5台だいが 134回かい おきて います。

The JMA records, in and around Japan, an average of one magnitude-7 earthquake, 17 in the magnitude-6 range and 134 in the magnitude-5 range every year.

• One earthquake has one magnitude.
• It says nothing about your location.
• In and around Japan, a magnitude-7 earthquake happens about once a year on average.

03深ふかさで、広ひろさが かわります

ニュースは「深ふかさ 10キロ」のように 言いいます。地震じしんが おきた 場所ばしょの 深ふかさです。

The news says things like "depth 10 km". That is how deep underground the earthquake started.

深ふかい 地震じしんは、広ひろい 場所ばしょに とどきます。でも 弱よわく なります。2015年ねん5月がつ30日にち、小笠原おがさわらの 近ちかくで 深ふかさ 682キロの 地震じしんが おきました。マグニチュードは 8.1でしたが、いちばん 大おおきい 震度しんどは 5強ごきょうでした。そして 47の 都道府県とどうふけん 全部ぜんぶで ゆれました。

A deep earthquake reaches a wide area, but arrives weaker. On 30 May 2015 an earthquake struck 682 km below the Ogasawara Islands. Its magnitude was 8.1, yet the highest shindo recorded was 5-jaku — and shaking was felt in all 47 prefectures.

04震度しんどが いくつだと、何なにが おきますか

震度しんどは、体からだの ゆれだけでは ありません。電車でんしゃや エレベーター、ガス、電気でんきが どう なるかも 決きまります。これを 知しって いると、会社かいしゃに 行いけるか、家いえに 帰かえれるかが わかります。

Shindo is not only about how the ground feels. It also decides whether trains run, lifts move, and gas keeps flowing — so it tells you whether you can get to work, or get home.

• 震度しんど4　鉄道てつどうや 高速道路こうそくどうろが、安全あんぜんを 確たしかめる ために とまる ことが あります。会社かいしゃに 行いけない、家いえに 帰かえれない ことが あります。
  Trains and expressways may stop for safety checks. You may not be able to get to work, or get home.
• 震度しんど5弱じゃく　エレベーターが 自動じどうで とまります。ガスの 安全あんぜんそうちが 働はたらいて、ガスが とまります。断水だんすいや 停電ていでんも おきる ことが あります。
  Lifts stop automatically. Gas meters cut the supply. Water and power may go too.
• 震度しんど6弱じゃく　立たって いる ことが 難むずかしく なります。電話でんわが つながりにくく なるので、災害用伝言さいがいようでんごんダイヤル（171）が 使つかえるように なります。
  Hard to stay standing. Phone networks congest, so the 171 disaster message service opens.

• 震度しんど6強きょう　立たてません。ゆかに 手てを ついて 動うごきます。広ひろい 地域ちいきで ガス・水道すいどう・電気でんきが とまる ことが あります。
  You cannot stand — you move on your hands. Gas, water and electricity may fail across a wide area.

05ニュースに 出でて くる ことば

漢字かんじを 覚おぼえなくても いいです。この ことばを 見みたら、何なにを するかだけ 知しって ください。

You do not need to learn the characters. Just know what to do when you see them.

• 緊急きんきゅう　とても いそぐ こと。すぐに しなければ ならない こと。警察けいさつや 病院びょういんの しらせにも 使つかいます。Kinkyu = urgent.
• 緊急地震速報きんきゅうじしんそくほう　「緊急きんきゅう」＋「地震じしん」＋「速報そくほう（はやい しらせ）」です。もうすぐ 大おおきく ゆれます。→ 頭あたまを まもって ください。Earthquake Early Warning.
• 津波警報つなみけいほう　海うみから 水みずが きます。→ 高たかい ところへ 行いって ください。
  Tsunami warning. Water is coming in from the sea. Move to high ground.
• 避難指示ひなんしじ　今いま にげて ください、という 意味いみです。
  Evacuation order. It means: leave now.
• 高台たかだい　高たかい 土地とちの ことです。津波つなみの とき、ここへ 行いきます。
  Takadai — high ground. Raised land. This is where you go in a tsunami.
• 余震よしん　あとから くる 地震じしんです。気象庁きしょうちょうは「大おおきな 地震じしんの あと 約やく1週間しゅうかん」、とくに「最初さいしょの 2〜3日にち」に 大おおきい ものが 多おおいと 書かいて います。
  Yoshin — aftershocks. Earthquakes that follow. The JMA writes that they continue for about a week after a large earthquake, and that the bigger ones cluster in the first two or three days.
• 震源しんげん　地震じしんが 始はじまった 場所ばしょです。
  Shingen — epicentre. The place where the earthquake started.

• You do not need to learn the characters — only what to do when you see them.
• Kinkyu jishin sokuho — protect your head.
• Tsunami keiho — go to high ground.
• Hinan shiji — leave now.
• Yoshin — aftershocks. Most likely in the first week, especially the first two or three days.

06スマホの 設定せっていを 今いま 見みて ください

大おおきな 地震じしんの 前まえに、スマホが 大おおきな 音おとで 鳴なります。緊急地震速報きんきゅうじしんそくほうです。

Before strong shaking, your phone sounds a loud alarm. That is the Earthquake Early Warning.

これは、この 記事きじで いちばん 大切たいせつな ところです。日本にほんで 働はたらいて いる 人ひとも、旅行りょこうで 来きた 人ひとも、同おなじ 設定せっていが いります。空港くうこうに 着ついた 日ひに 見みて おくと 安心あんしんです。

This is the most useful part of this article. It applies to people working in Japan and to visitors alike — worth checking on the day you arrive.

気象庁きしょうちょうは、受うけとる ために 2つが ひつようだと 書かいて います。

The JMA says two things are needed to receive it.

• スマホが 受信じゅしんできる 機種きしゅである こと
  your handset is able to receive the alert, and
• 設定せっていが して ある こと
  the setting is switched on.

気象庁きしょうちょうの しらべでは、スマホが 鳴ならなかった ために、速報そくほうが 出でた ことに 気きづかなかった 人ひとが いました。

In a JMA survey, some people missed the warning entirely because their phone did not sound.

音声おんせいが 流ながれる 機種きしゅも あります。「地震じしんです」と いう こえです。この 2つの ことばを 覚おぼえて おいて ください。

Some handsets play a voice that says "Jishin desu" — "It is an earthquake." Those two words are worth memorising.

気象庁きしょうちょうは、最大さいだい 震度しんど5弱じゃく以上いじょうと 考かんがえた とき、震度しんど4以上いじょうに なりそうな 地域ちいきへ 送おくります。とどくのは、つよい ゆれの 数秒すうびょうから 数十秒すうじゅうびょう前まえです。

The JMA sends it when it estimates a maximum shindo of 5-jaku or above, to areas expecting shindo 4 or above. It arrives seconds to tens of seconds before the strong shaking.

設定せっていの 見みかた

けいたい電話でんわの 会社かいしゃの ページを 見みなくても、スマホの 中なかで できます。

You do not need your carrier's website. The setting is on your phone.

設定せっていが 見みつからない ときは、設定せっていの 中なかの けんさくで「緊急きんきゅう」か「emergency」と 入いれて ください。機種きしゅに よって 場所ばしょが すこし ちがいます。

If you cannot find it, search your Settings for "emergency". The exact path varies by handset.

音おとは、どの けいたい電話でんわの 会社かいしゃでも 同おなじです。テレビや ラジオとも ちがう 音おとです。一度いちど 聞きいて おくと、地震じしんの ときに すぐ わかります。

The tone is the same on every carrier, and different from the TV and radio one. Hear it once and you will recognise it instantly.

設定せっていを しても 鳴ならない ときは、けいたい電話でんわの 会社かいしゃに 聞きいて ください。気象庁きしょうちょうが そう 書かいて います。

If it still does not sound after you change the setting, ask your mobile carrier. This is what the JMA advises.

• The alert tone is the same on every carrier, and different from the TV and radio one.
• Listen to it once so you recognise it instantly.
• If it still does not sound, the JMA advises asking your carrier.
